Greenland as the new Wild West of the American right
Translator's note: A lot has been written about the new US President Donald Trump's desire to annex Greenland to American territory through military force if necessary, and continues to be written. This new expansionism, which is based on a kind of renewed American nationalism and a "pure geopolitical" understanding determined by economic mercantilism, is accompanied by the revival of the colonialist mind for the internal colonization of North America. The white settler attack against the western regions of the United States, also known as the "American frontier" or "Wild West," was one of the successful elements of a nationalist-colonial discourse, which was essentially embodied in the concept of "border mentality".
The historian Frederick Jackson Turner, who is also mentioned in the article in which we translated, stated that this term means “the land belt, which is rarely occupied by Indian merchants, hunters, miners, farmers, foresters and adventurers of all kinds” and “an expanding society forms the temporary boundary essentially on the edge of free lands.” Both the "border" and the American west pointed to the line of separation between savagery/primitiveness and modern society/civilization. Of course, this border mentality included the deportation, expropriation, slaughter, or, if possible, domestication of the "wild" natives with the "civilizing" mission of the white settlers. The Wild West (around 1840-1890), which was occupied in the third "border" struggle of American settlers, is known for its "cowboy" image, the unique element of the uniform landscape, which still has an important place in American and world culture today. Dealing with the land, harsh natural conditions, distance from complex and dangerous cities... These are the "merits" of American settlers that inspired fascist movements in Europe, and Greenland offers a landscape that is very suitable for the new American settler logic and expansionism. Moreover, this is now brought to the agenda by new technology billionaires.
